Harikrishnan's touching doubt

Hari is a bit fat looking boy of average height and a bit dark complexion. He loves programming, games, reading and writing. He is definitely a heavy eater and weighs nearly my double. Just for fun, now lets call him Kim

Now you can read on.........
After reading this please leave you comments Hi,

you can call me 'Kim's friend' for now. This blog tells you what my friend told me one day and I thought it would be good if I get it published so that the whole world can read this. I knew this friend since 1991, the time when we were kindergarten kids full of energy and activity all day long. Since then, we have been good friends. I think it was our interest in computers that brought us together. If are to appreciate the content you have to understand quite a few things. We live in the small south Indian state of Kerala often called as 'God's own Country' by the tourism pundits. The people of this state speak the language Malayalam and those who speak it are called Malayalees. They are counted among the most intelligent people of the world. The state has near absolute literacy rate which is nearly the double what the country has. Just like northern India, the south too enjoyed a rich cultural heritage which was limited to the majority community. One of those age old traditions which is still being followed by majority of the people belonging to all communities looks a bit weird when one compares it to the western custom. Here, when a man decides its time to marry, he either gives an ad in the local dailies citing his wish and his expectations of his 'will be' wife or pays a visit to a suitable woman's house whom he had never seen before in his life. If everything goes well with the man's and the woman's family and if the man and woman decide they would get along well, they fix a date after consulting the local astrologer to hold the marriage in grand style. Now this is good news for the middle class woman folk who are capable of spreading news faster than the email technology or the national dailies. The news of the marriage spreads like wild fire. That should do it. Now you must have had a small picture of the environment which exists here. After reading this its you who should decide why would he have told this to me.

The following is as told to me by Kim:

[Real names have been changed]

“Hi! I'm Kim, a ten year old. My father's name is Kiran and mothers Meena and hence my name Kim. I'm going to take you through a day in my life, which is quite monotonous; warn you.

As I lay on my bed the sun rays pierced its way through the curtains and tried its best to force open my closed eye. Yet my eyes shut even tighter and it refused to give away the idle pleasure of sleep. This pleasure like all good things was short lived as my mother shook me to consciousness. Once awake I finished of those daily cleanliness duties [Kim's Friend:Certainly Kim was a clean 10 yr old].

The morning news paper awaited me on the front table. The front page, according to, me is so boring [Kim's Friend:Just like all other 10 yr olds]. The same news always keeps on repeating [Kim's Friend:Don't know whether that's true]. It's either some protests by some organization or some political parties or its some news about those same old terrorist activities and luckily for the news persons, India is blessed with an abundance of these [Kim's Friend:Certainly in a large country there bound to be some sort of stuff like that]. After a brief run through the sports news, its time for break fast. It was when I was half through my break fast that I remembered about the school home works that had to be done[Kim's Friend:I never thought he could stop eating food to do his homework]. I Immediately deserted my dining room for the study without even bothering to finish off the food. ( Teacher is very strict about these things you know)

My school is nearby, so I walk to my school everyday [Kim's Friend:If you see him now you surely won't say that he walked to his school everyday]. It was the beginning of the monsoons. It was not raining but everything was wet and the roads were slushy from the overnight showers. Mr.Thomas who lives near my house was about to leave for his office. He seemed to have caught a cold, for he was sneezing onto the street and as if to stamp his signature he spit on it. The most disgusting thing about adults especially male of the species is that they are so inconsiderate and hypocritical. I have seen many who do things that Mr.Thomas does and yet rallies about cleanliness at their home[Kim's Friend:Mr.Thomas is a true Indian Personal cleanliness first, public cleanliness second]. Once my father told me no not to drink soda from any shop as the rains had begun and so had the epidemics. It was then that I asked my father why he who gives all these big talks, spits on the street after chewing pan. Then as if to emphasize my point I showed my father an article that had come in the morning paper titled 'The Great Indian Thooo!'. I know that big talk does not suit my small mouth [Kim's Friend:Kiran was caught off guard there].

I am a quite an ordinary student, in quite an ordinary school, with quite ordinary teachers [Kim's Friend: ...but with quite an extraordinary friend...me of course]. Speaking about my day at school will make you doze off, so as to avoid this adverse situation I'll skip this part [Kim's Friend:Ya,...When one hears about the other sleeping, he too feels sleepy].

In the evening from school I usually go to my aunt Sneha's house. Father and mother would be out working and there would be no one in the house. Thats not the only motive of the visit to aunts house as there was another lure; Aunt is an expert cook [Kim's Friend:So I think its because of that aunt he weighs over 100 kgs today]. As I was about to knock the door, the door opened and the beaming face of aunt Sneha welcomed me. She had a visitor, it was Mrs.Sheela who visited her often and had met me many a times and was well acquainted with me.[Kim's Friend:So another definite overweight. This time a female] Aunt served the food and went away to talk to her freind. Anupama her only daughter's photo was kept atop the refrigerator. Yesterday I heard my mother tell my father how she was approaching the “to be married off” age [Kim's Friend:Kim wished that she had approached the “to be eaten off age”]. I didn't need be an Einstein to guess that now my aunt was talking about her. Suddenly my aunt's mobile started belting out the latest Bollywood song.

The caller certainly had some good news to give, the blood rushing to my aunt's face was an indication of this. Aunt covered the mouth piece and told Mrs.Sheela who was looking at her with enquiring eyes "It's Jalaja, she has phoned me to tell of a proposal." Then she resumed her telephonic conversation. She hummed enthusiastically in agreement with things the caller had to say. Just before hanging up the phone she said "My girl has completed her B.Tech. in computer science and is now working in Wipro. Also she is beautiful and fair."

By then it was five 'o clock, time to go home [Kim's Friend:School gets over by 3:30 pm. So was he eating for more than an hour?]. As I walked home I was musing about the call. Finally when I reached home Mum was waiting for me. I then blurted out the question that had been troubling me till then "Mum is it necessary to be fair to marry. "That was my confusion why was being fair a necessity for being beautiful. My mother seemed to be confused and dazed by the question herself, then she followed my gaze. Then we both stood for some time looking at the object of my concentration, a picture of Lord Krishna with Radha. Then we looked each other in the eye then she smiled and touched my forehead and I then knew that she had understood my question. She gently bent down and kissed my cheek and from her eyes a tear rolled down and in that tear was the answer I seeked” [Kim's friend: Nothing to say]

As told to me by Kim.

Presently Kim is pursuing higher studies in Marine Engineering in Kolkatta.
